If you’re looking to expand your driveway, you’re in the right place! In this blog post, we’ll show you how to excavate, prep the base, and set the forms for a driveway extension. Materials and Tools Needed:
- Bobcat or similar small excavator
- Shovels and pickaxes
- Measuring tape
- String line
- Metal stakes
- Form boards (typically 2x4s)
- Hammer and nails
- Level
Step 1: Plan the Driveway Extension
Before starting, you’ll need to plan the size and location of your driveway extension. In our case, we worked on a 29-foot long and 4-foot wide section next to an existing driveway. Make sure to mark the area clearly using stakes and spray paint, and ensure you have enough space for any form boards and tools.
Step 2: Excavate the Area
To begin, we used a Bobcat MT-100 to excavate the area. The goal is to remove about 4 inches of soil, which provides enough depth for the new concrete. If you don’t have access to an excavator, you can use shovels and picks for a smaller area. Take care to remove the soil evenly and avoid damaging the existing driveway.
- Tip: Use a form board as a guide along the existing driveway to check your depth. Keep everything level so your new concrete will seamlessly match the existing driveway.
Step 3: Adjust and Refine the Excavation
After removing the soil, we double-checked the depth, ensuring it was consistent across the area. This is important to prevent pooling water and to maintain a smooth, even surface for the new concrete. If necessary, dig a little more to make room for the form boards and to account for any slope.
Step 4: Install the Form Boards
Once the area is properly excavated, it’s time to set the form boards. Start by positioning the first form board along the edge of the existing driveway. Use a measuring tape to ensure that the extension is the correct width (in our case, 4 feet).
Secure the form board using metal stakes driven about 3-4 inches from the edge of the board. These stakes will hold the board firmly in place once the concrete is poured. Attach the board to the stakes with nails, making sure the form is straight and level.
- Tip: Use a string line to keep the form boards level and to maintain a consistent line across the driveway. This helps to ensure a professional-looking result.
Step 5: Ensure Proper Slope and Alignment
Driveways typically slope slightly to allow water to run off toward the street. In our case, the existing driveway already had a slope, so we matched that with the new extension. We used a level to verify that the slope of the form board was consistent.
Additionally, we noticed a crack in the existing driveway that slightly altered the level. To maintain structural integrity, we added an extra joint at the cracked section.
Step 6: Finalize the Forms
With all the form boards in place and the stakes securing them, you’re almost ready for the concrete pour. Add stakes and nails as needed, usually about 3 to 4 per form board, to ensure everything is secure. Once the form boards are firmly attached, double-check that the measurements are correct and that the forms follow the string line precisely.
- Pro Tip: Properly securing the form boards ensures they don’t move during the pour, preventing uneven edges and unsightly finishes.
Step 7: Review the Work
Before calling it a day, do a final review of your work. Make sure the forms are sturdy, the excavation is at the proper depth, and everything is ready for the concrete. In our case, the project resulted in a neat, straight form line, and the forms were securely held in place by the stakes.
This extension will not only add curb appeal but also provide more functional space for parking. The homeowners will no longer need to step on muddy or grassy areas when getting out of the car!
