Replacing an Old Window with a Modern Double-Hung Upgrade

At Frank’s Handyman Service, we recently completed a residential window replacement project in West Linn, Oregon, helping a homeowner upgrade an old, failing window to a modern and more functional option.

This project not only improved the appearance of the home but also solved a practical need for better ventilation and summer comfort.

🏠 Project Overview

The homeowner requested a window replacement because the existing window opened side to side, which made it difficult to use a portable AC unit during the summer months.

In addition, the old window was no longer in good condition. Moisture had begun to collect between the glass panes, a clear sign of seal failure and reduced energy efficiency.

Our goal was to remove the old unit and install a new double-hung window that opens up and down, providing better airflow, functionality, and a clean, updated look.

🔍 The Problem with the Old Window

Before replacement, the window showed several issues:

  • Side-sliding operation that limited AC compatibility
  • Moisture trapped between glass panes
  • Aging seals and caulking
  • Reduced insulation and overall performance

These issues can lead to drafts, water intrusion, and higher energy costs over time.

🛠️ Step-by-Step Replacement Process

1️⃣ Removing the Old Window

We began by cutting through the existing caulking using a multi-tool, then carefully removed the trim and surrounding sections to access the side caulking.

After removing the plastic screws, we used a pry bar to gently loosen the window and pull out the nails around the frame, allowing for safe removal without damaging the surrounding structure.

2️⃣ Measuring and Preparing for Installation

Accurate measurements are critical for a smooth installation. Once the opening was fully prepared and measured, we confirmed the fit for the new window before moving forward.

3️⃣ Installing the New Double-Hung Window

The new window was installed and temporarily secured with screws on both sides to hold it perfectly in place while we continued working.

This new design opens from top to bottom, making it ideal for portable AC units and improving everyday usability.

4️⃣ Flashing and Moisture Protection

To protect the home from future moisture issues, we installed protective plastic flashing around the entire window.

The flashing was stapled securely in place and trimmed carefully with a utility knife to ensure a clean, professional finish and long-term water protection.

5️⃣ Trim, Caulking, and Final Finish

Since the original trim was reused, we removed the old nails and reinstalled it using a nail gun, making sure everything was aligned and secure.

Fresh caulking was applied around the entire window to seal it against air and water leaks.
The final step was painting everything white, restoring the original look of the home and delivering a clean, professional result.

✅ Final Results

  • Brand-new double-hung window installation
  • Improved ventilation and AC compatibility
  • No more moisture trapped between glass panes
  • Clean, sealed, and weather-protected finish
  • Restored appearance with fresh paint

A practical upgrade that improves both comfort and efficiency.
